The Daily Draw: Three of Wands

Wands3January is where the seeds of the year are planted, a good time for devising the plans and strategies that will help you achieve what you desire over the next twelve months. It can be useful to draw on the energy of the Three of Wands for this task, because among its aspects are foresight, vision, and the ability to see down the road at how what you begin today will manifest somewhere down the road.

It’s often said that if you can imagine it you can achieve it, and I believe that’s true. But a complimentary, common theme is that you need to meet the universe at a point where you can receive what it is trying to give you. And that, my friends, requires a bit of what my dad used to call elbow grease. And to get the most out of that effort, you want to think about what, why, how, where and when to put in that effort. You can climb a mountain, but you can’t walk out of the pub at half eleven half-cocked and expect to scale Everest before sunrise.

Take some time to plan out what you want to do, what direction you want to go in. Meditate on it – the Three of Wands can also indicate some insight, intuition or vision that can help you achieve your goals, or perhaps even discover what they are. Set realistic goals and milestones – try not to overwhelm yourself which can bring on discouragement and invalidation. Take your time – you don’t need to have all the answers in one go. Do some research, some reading, take a course, find someone who can answer your questions.

Then don’t forget to put your plans in action. Imagining the journey is no substitute for actually taking it, but some forethought and planning might help make it go more smoothly.

I’ve recently blogged on this card focusing on leadership. You can read that post here.

The Daily Draw: Knight of Cups

CupsKnightHere’s the thing about knights: they’re always charging into situations with their energies before they really consider all the implications and ramifications of applying those energies to those situations. It’s a good way to avoid procrastination and overthinking, knights are nothing if not true to their nature and quite open about it. Sometimes, however it can be more pragmatic to be a little less overt about what you are thinking or feeling. The trick is in knowing which situations are appropriate for being up front and being reserved.

I had some time to reflect on this today in relation to the card I drew for this blog – The knight of Cups. I’m probably a pretty easy person to read emotionally. I imagine my face reflects whatever I’m feeling at any given moment. So, for example, when I have my Monday morning misappropriated by a surprise multi-floor mass reorganization of resources (i.e. pretty much everyone in the company moving desk). I’m sure my face and vocal tone reflect running through such emotions as disbelief, annoyance, amusement, resignation, frustration and more, not necessarily in that order. Though no one commented, I’m pretty sure the people around me were able to read those emotions from me, which is a good thing because my awareness of this prompted me to get over myself and acknowledge that, while it was an unpleasant surprise, it was hardly the zombie apocalypse.

Maybe today I’m just more aware of how I seem to others. I catch my reflection in a window during a meeting and can see my dismay at listening to the same unresolved conversation I was listening to six months ago and I wonder, “Do I really need to be presenting this energy at this meeting, or would it be better to adopt a more neutral tone?” There’s little to be achieved by compounding the stagnation of the situation with an implicit facial judgement.

It’s funny how it’s so easy to pick up on how others “make us” feel, but we’re not always so aware of our emotional effect on others. That brings us to another thing about knights – when you see one in a reading, ask yourself, “is the energy that they bring to a situation of benefit to that situation, or is it part of the problem?”

I’m not suggesting you be inauthentic, just be aware of the power of your emotions, especially when you display them. How would you respond to the emotions you project? Could that projection be different?  People who feel good around are more inclined to want to spend more time with you, be more cooperative with you, and show project positivity back.

The Daily Draw: Four of Wands

Four of WandsHooray! We’ve made it through the first working week of 2015. That wasn’t so bad, was it? Now I’ve got that Friday feeling, and the freedom of the weekend is pretty much here.

The four of wands is all about freedom, excitement and celebration. That feeling you get when you reach the end, or at least a break in a project, or when you’re waiting for an occasion or an event and the time finally arrives. It’s time to switch gears and have some fun. And doesn’t it just feel good to have that that break on a cold, wet, windy Friday in January (it is here anyway).

It doesn’t really matter where you are or what the circumstances. Maybe you don’t really think you have anything to celebrate. Never mind that. Take some time out to celebrate the joy of being alive. It doesn’t have to be some special occasion – make the day special for yourself. Say yes to feeling excited, exuberant, alive. It will raise your f=vibration. You’ll feel good, and the people around you will feel good to be with you.

The Daily draw: Nine of Swords

Nine of SwordsStess_worry_guilt

When you get up to the later sword cards, the brain goes into overdrive in some really nasty ways. In the case of the Nine of swords, this manifests as the torment one put’s oneself through using such negative emotions as guilt, stress and worry as weapons of self-sabotage.

Guilt, worry and stress can be strong, debilitating emotions with little or no return on investment. They can convince you that you are doing something to resolve an issue or a situation when what they are really doing is enabling procrastination while draining your energy.

Guilt’s greatest value seems to be in providing control over others, as in “guilting” someone into doing something. This is not a great recommendation for an emotion. Clearly the person in the nine of swords is not the one doing the controlling. People attempting to use this device to control others should be warned that the result is sometimes the opposite of the desired effect – rebellion instead of obedience. Trust me, I have first-hand experience from my youth of being “guilted”. If you’re going to muck around with other people’s emotions, you don’t get to choose how it backfires.

Has anything ever been accomplished by worrying? My mother used to do it all the time, about me, money, the house, me, the weather and me, to name a few things. Did it change anything? No, unless you count the occasional guilting (see previous paragraph).  I once knew a woman who was convinced that she could prevent bad things happening to her by worrying about them. I never saw any evidence of this. Of course, how do you prove something bad would have happened if you didn’t worry about it? It seemed as superstitious to me as not stepping on a crack in the pavement, but she was convinced it worked.

We all feel stress from time to time, but when someone is continually stressed eventually something is either going to snap or explode, maybe both. I’ve heard people go on about the positive benefits of “creative stress”. I would recommend they read the Artists Way. I would also suggest that, unless we’re talking about a block, the stress involved in the creative process isn’t the quite the same as the stress that might keep someone up at night staring at the ceiling.

If you are experiencing guilt, stress and worry maybe you should think about detoxing your emotions like you would your body. If they are associated with an issue or situation that needs to be dealt with, deal with it and move on. If they are associated with vague notions of possible scenarios that exist mainly in your imagination, process those emotions and let them go.  On the other hand, these emotions might be presenting from someone else in your life. If so, and you want to help them clear those emotions, try to maintain a boundary so that you don’t get caught up in their negative feelings. You HSPs and empaths know what I’m talking about – emotions can be contagious. Protect yourselves.

The Daily Draw: Three of Wands, Reversed

Wands3_RxRoad_Not_Taken

“If this is such a great idea, why didn’t someone else think of it first,” goes one of the greatest hits from my self-sabotage collection. I mean logically, there are billions of people in the world. What are the chances someone didn’t already do this/think of this/write this/wear the t-shirt? Or maybe they did and I just don’t know it.

By “this” I am not necessarily referring to this blog, but to any bit of creativity I may have been involved with over the years, from the arts-related ones to the other ideas that have more to do with the business of running a household. Pretty much every situation provides an opportunity for creativity.

I’m not saying I’ve been consistently and continually my own worst enemy in this regard. If I was that procrastinating, I never would have done anything. But from time to time this self-conscious energy gets in my way and I need to make an effort to get through it.

Is this resonating with you? Have you suffered from the yahbuts, as I’ve done from time to time? Have you got a dream, a vision, an idea you want to put into motion, make reality, but can’t seem to get started? “Yah but what if I’m wrong. Yah, but what if I fail? Yah, but I don’t really know enough about what I’m doing yet?” We’re far enough now into January 2015 that we should all be detoxing from the yahbuts and putting plans in motion. If that takes you into uncharted territory (for you anyway) enjoy the adventure.

Do trail blazers begin by saying, “I’m going to blaze a trail now”?  I rather doubt it. In most cases I think they are just trying to go somewhere and, unable to find a path that takes them there, make their own. They might not even notice they’re doing so. Sometimes these people become looked upon as leaders, even though that was probably not their intention either. Leadership is more a side effect resulting from being followed for having the courage to do what not enough people seem capable of – getting up and going for whatever it is they are seeking, undeterred by the distractions of negative self-talk, and with blinders on against any negative feedback on either side of their path.

The Road Not Taken” is a Robert Frost poem that has followed me throughout my life, about coming to a crossroads and deciding whether to take the common road or the one that fewer have walked. I’m from central New England, where there are many large woods. For years I thought I could choose between the two roads. Then I realized how big the woods are. Those two roads have been walked over and over again down through millennia, and even the less worn path is easily followed because others have done so. Look around at the vastness of the woods. There are more than two choices.

The Daily Draw: Nine of Cups

Nine of CupsSomebody put out a loaf of soft, fresh banana bread in the kitchen, which goes perfectly with the Nespresso to get my taste buds tingling.  It’s still there when I go back for a second cup, so I have a tiny bit more. It tastes so good, I really want it. At least I think I want it. Not sure this fits into any description of January dietary detox. Ah well, nevermind that.  I’m still easing into the year.

And so it goes with the Nine of Cups, indulging the senses with a bit of what you fancy, wherever that takes you. Maybe you’re surrounded by, and fully connected to, the natural elements, wrapped up warm in the winter sunshine. Maybe you’re on a lucky streak in a cyber-bingo room. Maybe you’re having a lazy day in bed. Maybe you’re not alone.

Let go and flow with the energy of the nine of cups. You can get what you want provided that you know what you want. A bit of self-indulgence can be good for the soul, especially in the potentially drab, grey depths of January when the holidays are well and truly gone except for the cleaning up and the payment due notices. Ugh. Forget I spoke.

Do something today that makes you feel good. You should be doing that every day really, but the fat cat in front of all those cups provides me with the opportunity to say so.  Maybe you’ll have more of an opportunity to do so today.

I finally deviated from the RWS deck. This depiction resonated more with me today, although it’s from an art show rather than a deck – Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project. This particular card is by French footwear designer Christian Louboutin, one of the contributors.

The Daily Draw: Page of Swords

Page of SwordsI don’t know about you, but this is the first time I’ve seen my office space since around lunchtime December 23rd, which is why you haven’t heard from me in a while (that and the drastic flu symptoms I had mid-month). Sure, Friday could have been a working day, but like many people around me I decided to start 2015 with a three day weekend (not counting the other nine and a half days I’d already been off)

I think the Page of Swords is as good a card as any to gently nudge in the first working week of the year. It says to me “Time to wake up now. After a couple of weeks filled mostly with child play at a single-digit age level (highly recommended), you need to realize that you are actually an adult with commitments and responsibilities, such as getting the children who actually are in single digits back to school.” Accepting this can be difficult, but in your heart you know it’s the truth.

The Page of Swords is also a reminder that it’s time to start using the left side of your brain again. Get those little grey cells moving before you really need them, which will be soon enough.

Re-entry into the daily routine can be a bit of a shock, even a let down. The page of swords reminds us that we have the inner fortitude to take on whatever comes our way. Not just a Monday, but the challenges and opportunities on offer in 2015. Stand up and look the day squarely in the eye. Let others drag themselves through it if they must. You know you’re up to the challenge.

The daily draw: The Moon

The MoonThe Moon is an enchanting card, and also one that can make you feel a bit apprehensive. The Moon’s energy can excite the imagination, cause us to dream vividly, and deepen our intuition. Because of that, it can also take us out of our comfort zones and make the world seem unfamiliar, showing us things we never expected and are perhaps not prepared for.

There’s no need to fear this energy, though some do. How troubled you are by it will correspond directly to how open you are to the experiences brought on by it and your own personal progress in self-realization, because as sure as the moon reflects the light of the sun, the dreams brought about by the moon reflect the dreamer – who they are, what unresolved issues they have, what they fear.

The Moon brings out the primal nature underneath the constructed reality of the ego. It can take us beyond the boundaries we set on our daily lives and make us behave in ways that, while seeming to go against who our ego tells us we are, are quite in line with what’s in our subconscious. It can be quite a liberating experience, or a scary one. It all depends on you.

One can be confused between intuition and imagination under the influence of the moon. Deep inside you know which is which, but in the moment it can be hard to tell which shadows are merely shadows. Be honest with yourself about what you are perceiving and stay grounded. If you’ve come to know your internal language it should be easier to discern between the two.

In the major arcana, the Moon sits between the Star and the Sun. The Star is about pure vision or inspiration from spirit, the undiluted message. That message must be carried back along the path beneath the moon for it to be brought to the conscious reality of the sun. In the process, that message will be colored and interpreted by the messenger. It may be enhanced or it may be distorted. It’s the messenger’s responsibility to be as true to the message as possible.

The Daily Draw: King of Wands, Reversed:

King of Wands, ReversedThe King of wands is a strong willed leader who knows what he wants and is keen to follow a direct route to get it. This person’s charisma is such that people naturally want to follow, or at least are willing to be caught up in his wake. He can be like a force of nature, plowing through any and every obstacle in his path. A good person to have around when there are things that need to be done, as long as he at least thinks they are things that he needs to get done.

When this king’s energies are turned on their head, we see a person who has no patience with time wasters or people who just don’t understand his mission. He’ll leave them behind in a heartbeat – they will just slow him down or get in his way. If you do tag along, be sure to give this king what he wants when he wants it, and make sure it’s right the first time. Mistakes won’t be tolerated. He doesn’t even understand how they could be made.

It’s a good idea to watch your back with this one. This king has a strong focus on power, and is always looking for an advantage. They might be your pal and smile at you one day, then stab you in the back the next if there is a perceived advantage to it. You might want to be economic with whatever info you give him, because he may try to use it as a weapon against you at another time.

The King of Wands can be manipulative in achieving his goal. Combined with the overwhelming self-confidence, this person would make an outstanding cult leader, getting people to abandon their old lives and embrace new ones to suit his agenda. If it also suits theirs, fine. If it doesn’t, that’s fine too. They will get the blame – they didn’t follow the program closely enough, they aren’t ready or capable of being part of the group, whatever. It will never be the leader who is at fault, because the reversed King of Wands is always right, even when he knows he isn’t.

Remember, just because many people are following a seemingly popular leader doesn’t mean you have to be one of them.

The Daily Draw: The Lovers

The LoversNo Runaway Brides

The Lovers is a card of strong emotion relating to our connection with others. It’s represents the passion of sexuality and the power of love. Either can be a driving force. Combined it can be life changing.

The lovers can also represent our personal beliefs and core values. I’m talking about the kind of values that are supported by an unshakable foundation supported by a twenty-foot concrete and metal sunken foundation. What are they? If you see this card come up and you don’t know the answer to that question, it might be time to think about it. How far would you go for someone or something important to you? Is there a line you wouldn’t cross?

It’s easy to go through life wafting through each other’s energy fields and picking up a common consensus of what is right, what is wrong, and what reality is, for example. And that’s fine. It’s nice to have a common frame of reference. It helps with communication.  Ideally however, you would like to consider for yourself what those concepts mean to you, as opposed to having them be a reaction to or an alignment with what everyone else is doing.

The irony is that this card, with its emphasis on joining with another, is actually about developing one’s own individuality. And of course that makes perfect sense, because knowing yourself and what you stand for is a prerequisite for knowing what you want in a relationship and what kind of person would be a good fit. Otherwise you run the risk of being one of those people who take on their partner’s beliefs and values, at least superficially, which rarely works out and probably never should. Eventually you get to the point where you can’t keep pretending to be something you’re not, and bolt like Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride. Yes, I know it’s a RomCom. I can like RomComs.
